Why bear life’s many invalidations,
The evil man’s wrong, the proud man’s contempt,
The unrequited love, the mistreatment
That good people from the unworthy take,
When he himself might his timely end make
With intimacy of a bare knife’s blade?
Why grunt and sweat a life without purpose,
But that the fear of something after death,
The undiscovered country, from sojourn
No traveler returns, puzzles one’s thoughts,
And makes us rather bear this existence
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Instead, sally forth and brave the dark seas
And disembark from this temporary port,
Where tired spirits rest in their coils
Anxiously shunning the faithful toils,
To steer leeward nigh to heavenly lights
Where limits of flesh sty freedom no more.
-Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Dedicated to my friend and muse. May we brave the dark seas together and realize what dreams may come.
